How Der Standard Built a Best-of-Breed Editorial Workflow with Flexibility at the Core

Customizing an editorial system that meets real newsroom needs: Mario Naito, Head of Systems Design Engineering at Der Standard, will share how his team built an integration hub that connects the best tools for each task—rather than relying on a single all-in-one platform.

Their setup combines planning with Kordiam, content management with Livingdocs, asset management with Comyan, automated image processing with OneVision Amendo, automatic print layout with Protecmedia AIDA and several other critical systems. The main systems, Kordiam and Livingdocs, are equipped with a central, highly available Message Queue (MQ) for communication with other systems. A MQ acts like a delivery service that stores and passes updates between systems until they can be successfully processed. Unlike APIs and webhooks, which expect an immediate response, MQs can hold information safely if a system is temporarily unavailable, helping workflows stay reliable even when technology is unpredictable. The MQs are supplemented by CMC-SyncFlow, a hub to which additional systems are connected and interactions can be carried out across multiple systems, even if necessary with a time delay.

In his presentation, Mario will explore:

  • How Der Standard’s integration hub works across multiple editorial tools

  • How MQs provide a safety net that APIs and webhooks alone cannot

  • How flexibility in system design supports better workflows for editorial teams

  • How key users within the newsroom helped drive wider adoption

  • How to use Kordiam for centralised control of editorial workflows

Mario will also demonstrate real workflows from Der Standard in action, showing how information flows between systems automatically without adding extra complexity for editors.

This session is designed for editorial professionals who want a practical view into building flexible, future-proof workflows. It offers a behind-the-scenes look at the decisions that shaped Der Standard’s technology strategy, along with real examples of how planning, production, and publishing are coordinated through Kordiam and beyond.
